CGE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with York St John University

Wednesday 4 August 2010

Education has a role to play in action for social justice

York St John University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Centre for Global Education York on Wednesday 4 August, signalling further collaboration between the two organisations through education on issues of social justice and human rights.

The Centre for Global Education York (CGE) will continue to contribute to an enhanced student experience by delivering expertise in a variety of global educational projects and events. It plays a special role in supporting the schools agenda, introducing global issues into teaching from early years to postgraduate. The collaborative approach which exists between the CGE and York St John enables students and staff across all faculties to broaden their understanding of global interdependence, to engage in global issues, and to promote and encourage action for social justice.

The agreement will also contribute to the University’s internationalisation strategy through the nurturing and development of relationships between York St John and overseas’ institutions. Over the last 28 years the CGE has developed many local, national and international partnerships which promote the global dimensions in education. These underpin the joint working between York St John and the CGE through visits, projects and lectures.

York St John’s Town and Gown lecture series features a dedicated speaker each year selected by the CGE to mark Black History Month. On 19 October 2010, Baroness Haleh Afshar will discuss whether the teaching of Islam and Minority has a role to play in bringing together Town and Gown. Baroness Afshar teaches Politics and Women's Studies at the University of York and serves as a Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords. In 2005 she was awarded an OBE for services to equal opportunities.

Chrissie Dell, Global Education Consultant at CGE said: “The significant signing today renews and refreshes the long-standing relationship between the Centre for Global Education York and the University and provides a platform for further development of that relationship over the next few years.”

Professor David Maughan Brown, Deputy Vice Chancellor at York St John University added: “The Centre for Global Education’s focus on human rights is wholly in accord with York St John’s mission ‘to embrace difference, challenge prejudice and promote justice’ and the Centre’s global partnerships are of great benefit to the University as we work towards achieving the goals of our internationalisation strategy.”

The signing ceremony took place at York St John University in the presence of executives from both partner organisations. Following the formal signing, documentation was exchanged and plans were put in place for future co-operation between the two organisations

Launch of Portal for Human Rights Schools

HREA is very pleased to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) with the launch of a new web portal to promote understanding and application of a human rights-based approach to schooling.

The CRC calls for all children to be treated with dignity and respect. In the context of schooling this means:

  • access to a quality education;
  • children’s active participation in the life of the school;
  • protection from all forms of abuse that may occur in the school setting;
  • the provision of human rights education.

A human rights-based approach (HRBA) to schooling is concerned with the organisation of learning so that it is reflective of human rights principles and promotes understanding and cherishing of the human rights framework. The HRBA process involves complex interactions between the right to education in general, the implementation of human rights practices within the structure of the school itself, and the teaching of human rights through schooling.

HREA has compiled a wealth of resources on the human rights-based approach to schooling, which can be found in our new Portal for Human Rights Schools. The aims of this portal are:

  • to provide viewpoints on the theoretical underpinnings of the HRBA;
  • to present a range of HRBA practices that are emerging in schools worldwide;
  • to encourage "best practices" in the documentation and evaluation of the HRBA by sharing resources dedicated to examining the most pressing issues in evaluating human rights education.

The Portal for Human Rights Schools can be accessed at:

BERLIN DARE Conference attended by JZ (Jenny Zobel) and Mariela

In May our network organised the workshop "Pathways interconnecting history education and democratic citizenship/human rights education" in Berlin. The workshop reflected on twenty years of "regime changes" in Central and Eastern Europe and resulted in a set of very useful learning tools and resources. The workshop coincided with DARE's General Assembly during which a new DARE Board was elected for a two-year term.
