Eco Schools and Global Education

Training for primary and secondary practitioners

Where are you and your school with regard to Sustainability and the Eco School Awards? Are you at the beginning of the journey or have you achieved the Bronze or Silver Award already? Do you want to progress further but need ideas and support about what is required for the awards including Green Flag? How does Global Education fit into all of this? The following course will be delivered by Rosina Gilboy who is a practicing and qualified Eco Green Flag Assessor and Global Consultant. She will aim to cover:

  • How does Global Education support Eco Schools?
  • How can you develop an Eco School’s audit and what tools can you use?
  • What ‘Eco’ support is available to you and your school?
  • Gain ideas from case studies from successful Eco Schools?
  • Consider actions required to achieve the Green Flag?
  • Review resources within CGE’s Resource Centre, that can support you on your Eco journey

Global Education through SEAL

Training for primary and secondary practitioners, ITE providers & advisors

This half-day workshop will enable teachers and educators to:

• Increase their understanding of the global dimension and how it relates to SEAL.

• Develop their confidence in the delivery of cross-curricular and skills based learning

• Review and trial materials from this innovative national pilot project

SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS: TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE - going beyond recycling

Build on the recycling many schools are already involved in by exploring ways to embed themes of sustainability into the curriculum. This is connected to climate change in looking at how human rights are already affected globally. Participants will benefit from resourced themes & activities to take away. DEVELOPING AS A FAIR TRADE SCHOOL

For schools that already organise activities in Fairtrade Fortnight or have registered for the Fair Trade School Award . This course will tackle issues around achieving the award & offer ways to develop & embed themes linked to Fair Trade into the curriculum. TRANSFORMING SCHOOL FOOD CENTRE Sustainable Food & Farming Education

This CPD day is a partnership event run by Food for Life Partnership in association with Centre for Global Education & River Swale Farm

This popular workshop uses global food to help young people make links between the foods they take for granted & the diversity of people & cultures. Through foods & where they come from the global dimensions & community cohesion are explored. PHILOSOPHY FOR CHILDREN (P4P)level 1 accredited 2 day course (fees £275)

P4C enquiry aims to help children develop the basic skills and dispositions that will enable them to contribute to a pluralistic society. It can boost children's self-esteem and intellectual confidence. It aims to create a caring classroom situation where children

  • learn to listen to and respect each other
  • make links between matters of personal concern such as love, growing up, friendship, bullying and fairness, and more general philosophical issues such as change, personal identity, free will, space, time and truth.
  • are encouraged to challenge and explore the beliefs and values of others, and to develop their own views
  • experience quiet moments of thinking and reflection
  • learn to be clear in their thinking and to make responsible and more deliberate judgements
  • learn to be more thoughtful by basing their decisions and actions on reasons

THINKING OF LINKING? - Step by Step to a Global School Link (fee £90 inc resource book & lunch)

We are offering a one-day training course with a course book to take way covering:

  • what are your expectations of a global link?
  • what activities could take place in your link?
  • what methods of communication will be best?
  • where can you find a partner?
  • who else in your school might get involved?
  • when is all this going to happen?

TRAINING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: PERSONA DOLLS£195 to include a Persona Doll Lunch & refreshments are included in the fee

We are offering this invaluable ‘hands-on’ training to teachers, early year’s practitioners, learning support staff, lecturers, local education advisors, children centre workers and students who wish to develop their settings/classroom inclusive practice. Persona dolls are a well researched and a trusted methodology that challenge prejudice, counter discrimination, promote equity and justice and support community cohesion

The dolls themselves are culturally-authentic, non-sexist, appropriately dressed handmade cloth Dolls with accessories that support their use within any setting. The training is built around these dolls, where each has their own personality, life history, likes and dislikes. Young children willingly accept them as friends enabling them to become a powerful tool for exploring, uncovering and confronting racism and other social inequalities. Free at Last? – slavery then & now

This interactive full day workshop for KS2 & KS3 teachers focuses on the topics of Africa before slavery, life aboard the ships to the Americas, then on the plantations, resistance, rebellion, abolition and modern slavery. Activities promote community cohesion by exploring how past injustices have affected communities locally and in the wider world. Global French & Spanish – engaging with the wider world

This workshop challenges assumptions and stereotyping by introducing participants to the cultural variety of the French and Spanish-speaking worlds, such as Morocco, Martinique, Bolivia and Chile. Sustainable Schools & the Global Dimension

This popular full day course for KS2/3 will explore practical activity around the 8 ‘doorways’ of Sustainable schools and look at curriculum materials available on Sustainability themes and how to embed this into the curriculum. This full day course for KS3 leadership and teachers uses the recently published cross-curriculum dimensions planning guide to explore delivering the 6 cross curricular themes through pupil enrichment days and embedding into the curriculum. Understanding Global Food

An interactive workshop aimed at supporting Sustainable Schools and Fair Trade, offering a range of fun activities around sustainable food for teachers to pilot in their classes, using photos, quiz and card games, powerpoint presentations, role play and traditional tales. Aimed at primary school teachers, Head, Governors and classroom assistants.

Identity and Cultural Diversity

This interactive workshop aims to promote Community Cohesion by offering practical ways to raise awareness of cultural diversity and identity in the classroom. Each activity sheds some light on what identity and cultural diversity really means, makes links with conflict resolution and empathy, and suggests fun ways of bringing these ideas to life. Aimed at primary and secondary teachers (Key stages 2-4), Heads and classroom assistants.

Global French and Spanish – Engaging with the Wider World

This interactive workshop aimed at primary and secondary teachers (Key stages 2-4), Heads and classroom assistants promotes Community Cohesion by introducing participants to the rich cultural variety of the French and Spanish-speaking worlds, such as Mali, Morocco, Martinique, Bolivia and Chile. Taking the teaching of French and Spanish out of its comfort zone, the workshop challenges stereotypes and offers teachers a range of fun language activities to develop curiosity and empathy for different cultures and life styles.

Every Child’s Future Matters – climate change and children’s rights

A joint workshop exploring global issues of climate change and its likely impact on children worldwide and their rights. Linking Every Child Matters with concerns of child well-being in this country to issues relating to child well-being around the world. Aimed at Key stage 2/3 teachers, Heads, Local Authority Advisers.

Making Global Links

This whole day course is for primary & secondary teachers, SMTs & governors who are keen to include the global dimension in the curriculum. After an introduction there will be workshops on:

  • Identity & cultural diversity - Community Cohesion
  • How the Global School Award supports curriculum development;
  • Global School Partnerships – how to set up a link and funding information
  • Children’s Rights;

Conflict Resolution

This day has been jointly developed between CGE & UNICEF. Sample a range of global activities around conflict, cooperation and mediation. Take away a half term generic scheme for teaching and learning about conflict resolution. Discuss ways of handling conflict within the classroom/school and connected these to conflicts in the wider.

Developing a Fair Trade School

Aimed at KS2/3 teachers, Heads, Local Authority Advisers ad Governors from schools that have already attended the course Becoming a Fair Trade School and/or have registered to work towards Fair Trade School status.

Let’s Go Global in Early Years

How to incorporate the global dimension in the Early Years & Foundation Stage. A practical workshop with ideas and activities to support the early learning goals.

Global Dimension: mapping the curriculum

The course takes a hands-on approach to looking at developing school policy and support curriculum planning which embeds global resources and activities to selected themes/topics for Early Years and Key Stages 1& 2 & 3.

UN.Fair! Get Active?

An active citizenship day for Fairtrade Fortnight Targeted towards secondary students & staff. The event will respond to key questions: What are the global challenges today? What is the International Community’s response? Practical pupil-centred workshops focusing on key MDGs around sustainability, poverty, education, health & gender.
